You can stop your time wasting habits, better utilize your time and resources, keep focus and start reaching your goals with these 3 easy to follow steps.

Step #1 Create your personal ‘blueprint’

Basically, this means getting your ass off the couch and start doing some serious planning! Having a plan or plans will keep you on course and in control. You’ll be able to pre-empt and foresee any problems and have a plan in place to counter it.

Most importantly, having a plan prevents your energy from being scattered. You know what to do, when to do and how to go about doing it. I cannot tell you enough how having simple plans can save you loads of time!

Start by creating weekly, monthly followed by yearly plans. If you’re a student, a simple example would look like this:

Monday: Revise geography
Tuesday: Movies with my friends
Friday: Head to the library for research
Sunday: Complete the assignment for Ms Grundy

As shown above, it doesn’t have to be complex, overly detailed or even have any structure of any kind. You just have to start creating plans now!

Step # 2 Stay focused

How often do you find yourself concentrating doing your work; the phone call comes and you get distracted? The internet, computer, TV, radio, magazines… We’re practically surrounded by distractions.

It requires a certain amount of discipline to stay focus and keep on course according to your plan. If you stay focused and take massive action towards your plans and goals, you’ll find yourself increasingly able to not get distracted.

One tip I can give is to find 10 minutes a day to just sit still and meditate. Clear your mind, think of nothing and just ‘shut down’ your brain for that 10 minutes.

Step #3 Control your environment

If you can’t move them, move yourself! Don’t be lazy, take the bus down to the local library if you need to get some homework done without the high tech distractions of your room.

Keep those lad magazines out of sight and hidden in a box when you need to do some serious reading up. You need to be in control! Don’t let time dictate what you do, let your own planning dictate what you should do when you need to do it.

Ryan is a firm believer in the mantra “time is money”. Take a break

We’re living in an increasingly blindingly fast paced world. It’s an ‘innovate and catch-up or die’ environment we’re in. How many of us actually stop and slow down to relax? Taking a break is not just a pleasant afterthought, it is essential for health and for you to perform at a peak…

1. Taking a break is important for continued peak performance

This is sounds so simple yet most of us, caught in work, do not practice it. Think about all the Olympic athletes. They practice and work hard but they also understand the need for a good comforting rest to allow their bodies to recharge and repair itself.

It’s the same for our mental states. If you want to perform at peak, giving yourself a break and relaxing is a definite must.

2. Relaxed brain = Increased creativity

Have you had one of those moments where you keep thinking and thinking about a problem and can’t seem to solve it? The very moment, you take your mind of it and do something relaxing (say taking a shower, napping or taking a jog) and the solution suddenly dawns on you?

It’s not magic that it’s happening. It’s your brains at its subconscious relaxed state. The brain works better when it’s relaxed and not under immense stress and pressure. When you’re doing something relaxing, you actually rejuvenate the mind. And while you’re taking your mind of the matter, your subconscious is working overtime (in the relaxed state) to find the solution to your problems.

3. Have fun!

Go out with friends, spend time with your family, indulge in some of your luxury or just plain sit at home and waste some time away. You’d be surprised what a little rest and luxury can do to lift your spirits!

Take a break from your workload and worries and re-align your energy and focus by doing something that makes you feel happy, that gives you joy, that creates laughter and something that re-energizes you!

Ryan is a firm believer that a healthy mental state is the most important ingredient for success. You’ll need to stay nifty, adaptable and be able to innovate to stay alive and compete with the ‘big dogs’.

Time Management Rule #1

Set up a weekly and monthly routine and stick to it. Think of having this routine as your business ‘blueprint’ it spells out what you need to do on which day. For example, it could be a simple payday on the 5th, advertising on the 10th and so on and so forth. It may sound simple and downright basic but many small business owners do not have an in built routine of ‘when to do what’

Having a routine also allows you to contrast and adapt for the next month. Reflect back and look at the impact the previous month’s routine had on your business. Continually tweak and prime it. Most importantly, having a ‘blueprint’ to follow saves you time.

Time Management Rule #2

You have to be clear about your priorities. Commit it to writing, talk to your employees, suppliers and business associates about it. You’d be surprised how your subconscious mind works toward your priorities once you’ve made them public.

Once you have set out priorities, you’ll have a clearer picture of your own business and would be able to make decisions based on them. This way, you cut through the clutter and will be able to make decisions quicker and assign time for the most pressing issues.

Time Management Rule #3

Create goals and be disciplined

Once you’ve your priorities in place, it’s time to set some goals. The goals will be your ‘chief aim’ for your business and the actions leading up to it will be the things you should be spending your time on.

Recognize the difference between tasks, priorities and goals and divide your time accordingly. Tasks are day to day events that need to be done but that can be managed and put aside as opposed to priorities which may have an immediate effect on your business.

Ryan is a firm believer in the mantra “time is money”.
